Robert Bretland b 1821
Robert Bretland was born in Toxteth Liverpool, the son of  Robert Bretland and his wife Ann Rose. He was a shipwright  by trade and according to the 1891 census gave his occupation as  a retired ship surveyor. He married Mary Ann Todd 11th May 1847 at St Pauls Church in Liverpool. At the time of the marriage he lived in James St and Mary lived in Davies St.
James Street was one of the oldest streets in Liverpool and along with Pool Lane was the principal road from the castle to the river.
His fathers occupation was given as a cooper on the marriage certificate.  whilst Mary’s father William Todd was a basket maker. The witnesses were Bridget Todd and James Mc Coppin
Robert was  made a freeman of the city of Liverpool
